   Search Tips

Searching for a Company Name

Your search for a particular site will be based upon the content you search by, thus correct spelling is very important.  AccessCI is not case sensitive.  To search by company name, keep the following conventions in mind:

q       If a company is known by its initials, enter the name with a space in between each letter. (i.e. G T E, M C I)

q       Ordinarily no punctuation is found in the company name except apostrophes. (i.e. J R O’Grady Corp)

q       Company, Incorporated, Limited, etc. is abbreviated unless it is officially part of the company name. (i.e. The Company Store)

q       Ampersands are used when they are part of the official company name. (i.e. A T & T, H & R Block, Johnson & Johnson)

q       “The” is not used unless it is officially part of the company name. (i.e. The Gap Stores, The Limited)

q       The company name search can use the wildcard character "*". Use the asterisk character to indicate where any text will do. For instance, to find all sites that start with the letters "Time", use the string "Time*". This would find, for example Time Warner.

By default, the company name search is a contains field, meaning that if you put in a word, the database will search for any site that has that word in the company name. (i.e. you can put in “Time” and the database will look for any sites that have “Time” in the company name, producing sites like, Time Warner, New York Times, The Maritime Foundation, Lifetime Television, etc.) Another way to specify the default behavior would by to search for "*Time*".

Searching for a Government or Education Site

q       Universities are found in the database by the system name first, (University abbreviated Univ) followed by the campus name. (i.e. Univ of CA San Diego)

q       Local government sites are listed with their government designation first. (i.e. City of Los Angeles, County of Alameda)  Note:  You might also use the local government designation within Industry, specific government SIC code and area code or ZIP sector for the city or county you are requesting.)

q       State government is tracked by the state name and department or agency. (i.e. California Dept of Forestry)  Note: You might also use the state government designation, specific government SIC and state under geography.)

q       Federal government locations are listed by agency.  If the agency name begins with the words United States, they are listed like U. S. Dept of Defense. Note: Use the federal government designation and specific government SIC (Standard Industry Code.)

Searching for an Enterprise

Using the Company Name search criteria will find individual locations whose name is the same as what you specified.  If the company is part of a Fortune or Forbes ranked company, and you want to see all locations for that parent, you might search under Enterprise instead of Site.  For example, if you are looking for all of Ford Motor Company, but enter Ford in the site name selection (rather than the Enterprise section), you will miss the other divisions of Ford (i.e. Lincoln, Mercury, Motorcraft, etc.)

Searching for a ZIP Code

When including multiple ZIP codes in a search, it may be appropriate to enter in a range of numbers.  If, for example, you wanted 94601, 94602, 94603, 94604, 94605, you could simply enter in a range--94601 to 94605--to get all the ZIP codes you want.  If you want non-sequential ZIP codes, separate the ZIP codes with a comma (ie. 94601,94603,94605.)  There is no limit to the number of ZIP codes that can be entered in AccessCI for one search.

A ZIP sector is the three digit prefix in a ZIP code (ie. the ZIP sector for 90210 is 902).  When selecting a ZIP sector, AccessCI will include all ZIP codes that contain the leading three digits of the ZIP.

Selecting Multiple Fields

At times, you may want to select multiple fields simultaneously.  To achieve this, simply hold down the shift button (or the control button) as you select the multiple fields.  Once all fields are selected you can release the shift button and save the selection.

Omitting Selections

In each of the fields there is a box that can be selected or deselected to omit the content specified.  If wanting all criteria except something specific, it would probably be easiest to utilize the omit button.  (ie. If you do not want government or education sites, go to the Industry Vertical selection and select all government and education sites, then check the omit box prior to saving the selection.  This will generate a search that will include all industries except government and education.)
